5 Months Old

I stopped counting how old Cash is by the number of weeks, and switched to the 15th of every month to be his... monthly birthday...? Whatever you call it. So as of yesterday, he is 5 months old!! What a big guy. Since it's now been 6 weeks since the last update (because his "4 month" update was when he was 16 weeks old on January 5, instead of January 15. I know, so confusing.) a lot has changed! The way things were at the start of his 4th month are not how they were at the end of it.

There he is, being his cute self! I can't get over it. I know every mom says that their kid is cute... but he's just downright adorable. I think I took like, 30 pictures for this update... then narrowed it down to my top 15... then had Garrick come and pick his favourite.. and he picked pretty much every one.

Highlights
- teething and drooling all the time
- really testing his voice. Makes a loud, high-pitched "EEEEE!" sound, likes to say "mmmm", "whispers"
- January 9: rolled from tummy to back for the first time, like it was no biggie
- January 20: consistently rolling
- does not like to bathe alone. LOVES baths with Dad, and likes showers with mom
- stopped flinching and waking himself up
- began napping 2-4 times a day IN HIS CRIB
- started falling asleep on his own at bed time
- got a "Sophie the Giraffe" and loves to chew on it
- getting very strong, started rolling from back onto side
- has little interest rolling over - attempting to army crawl forward
- got his first passport!
- studies his hands
- began going diaper free for parts of the day - "Elimination Communication"
- sometimes sits at the big table in his high chair during dinner
- became very ticklish

Ahh... The most talked about topic regarding babies: sleep.
I had mentioned at the beginning of January that we were really working to get Cash back into a bed time routine, as well as introduce a nap routine. I also wanted to help him learn to fall asleep on his own, rather than nursing to sleep. We were having a problem with him falling asleep while nursing, then when we tried to put him in his crib, he'd wake up. Boo.

But let's rewind a bit. At the beginning of January, he was spending a majority (if not all) of the night in our bed. Which would be fine, except that he started wanting to nurse literally ALL. NIGHT. LONG. I'm such a light sleeper, that it kept me up most of the night. Not to mention that I was stuck in pretty much the same position the whole time. And he also became quite the wiggler while sleeping! So it was time to start re-introducing the crib to him.

I certainly didn't want to force him to sleep all alone, so we gently encouraged him and then followed his lead. We implemented his bed time routine again, and he'd be in his crib asleep by 7:30 pm usually (at this point, I was still nursing to sleep). If he woke up before we fell asleep, we'd go in, rock him back to sleep, and put him in his crib, and if he woke up after we fell asleep, I would bring him to our bed the rest of the night.

Over a couple weeks, he began falling asleep in his crib after nursing, and his sleeping blocks began to lengthen again. For a couple weeks, he would wake up to eat at 2/2:30 and 4/5. When he'd wake up, I started to put him back in the crib after feeding, to see if he would stay... And he did! Although he usually wakes up between 6:30 and 7 then, but that's okay.

The last few nights have been crazy good! Wednesday night, he fell asleep at 7:30 and didn't wake up until 5 am to eat! Then slept til 6:45. Thursday night, he fell asleep a bit earlier, and I had to actually wake him up to eat at 5:30 am cuz my chest was rather sore lol. Last night, he woke up at 4 am to eat, but he's got a bit of a cold, so that's okay.

I also started a nap routine. Until last week, it was going great! I'd nurse him to sleep, put him in his crib, and he'd nap there for 45 minutes. I could get him down successfully for at least 2 of his naps, aiming for 3, and occasionally he would even take a fourth!

Cash really notices the cats now. Motor will rub his face all over Cash, and Cash tries to grab him and pull toward his mouth. Pirate has warmed up quite a bit, and even tries to cuddle.

He looooves spitting/farting noises. And being lifted above our heads.

He's such a great little man. If he's in our bed early in the morning, he seems to know that it's quiet time until one of us starts talking. He just lays there quietly, kicking his legs and chewing on his blanket.

I think that's all!

"A portrait of Cash once a week, every week, in 2013"

I think, once the whole year is done, I will make a photo book with all 52 photos. What a great souvenir of his first year.

"A portrait of Cash once a week, every week, in 2013"

Hilarious.

And the story behind this one, you ask?
Well I frequently purse my lips together and blow out, making that farting noise. Cash thinks this is one of the funniest things ever. And just in the last few days, he's been trying to do it.. all that comes out is spit bubbles though. No sound. He attempts it a lot, signalling that he wants us to do it.
