11 Month Update (yep, it's late, of course!!)

couch cash 11 months

Are you really going to be ONE YEAR OLD in only a month?! (well... less than a month, by the time I get around to posting this!). I can't believe it. Also, let me tell you... it is EXTREMELY difficult to get you to sit on the couch. This month I was smart enough to turn the tv on while attempting to capture your handsome-ness.

Physical Development
Cash definitely seemed to gain some extra strength and ability in this last month! He learned to get from his army crawl position on his tummy, to pulling himself into standing position (July 25). I was super excited by this... until he learned how to pull up in the crib, and couldn't figure out how to get back down. That made for a few rough nights of sleep. And then one night he pulled the camera to the baby monitor off the side of the crib, so it needed to be hung up on the wall!

Shortly after, he learned to bend down and pick up objects, while standing against furniture.

Whenever we had previously been playing on grass, I noticed that Cash would get up onto hands and knees. July 22, he showed us (in the grass, of course) that he knew how to "real" crawl. But still insists on army crawling everywhere else. Maybe he doesn't want grass stains on his tummy.

He began waving hello and good-bye, when prompted.

Still no actual words from him! He does a lot of "da da da" "ma ma ma "ra ra ra", etc. But doesn't really associate them to anything in particular. He does know who/what a lot of things are - dad, mom, motor, pirate, fish, ball.

Eating
This kid has quite the appetite, he must have my metabolism. He eats the most at breakfast time.
Grapes are definitely a big favourite of his. He also really enjoys salmon, still loves yogurt, bagel with cream cheese, cheese cubes, spaghetti, pork chop, and shrimp. There's nothing that he doesn't really like, but sometimes goes one night where he's not too excited about a particular food, but likes it again the next time we have it.

Sleep
The bain of my existence. Sleep got really bad again this month, with many wake-ups only 2 hours apart. He stopped falling asleep on his own, and stopped letting Garrick comfort him. I decided to start some sort of gentle night-weaning. First, I tried to shorten the nursing sessions, but that didn't work. Then I tried to nurse him in less comfortable positions.. like with him kind of sitting in my lap instead of comfortable laying... so that he would think it was too much effort just for a comfort nurse. Buuut he started just turning his head funny and causing extreme discomfort for me!

Miscellaneous
We bought him the next size up car seat! He was getting very close to the height limit on his bucket seat, and we just knew that he would be more comfortable in the convertible seat, so I spent a couple weeks doing some hardcore research, and we finally decided on the Evenflo Symphony DLX. We wanted a rear-facing/ forward-facing/ booster convertible, one with high ratings (obviously), easy to install (we frequently switch between 3 vehicles), among other factors. So far, we're loving this! Cash rode in it when we went down to Osoyoos, and did GREAT! He's definitely more comfortable in it.

Oh, I almost forgot! Cash also rode in the new car seat when we went to the Kootenays. Only a couple days before Garrick was scheduled to go for his usual work trip, we decided to give it a shot and have Cash and I join him. It's a loooooot of driving, with all the stops Garrick has to make on the way, so we didn't know if it would go over too well. We left at 5 am, and didn't get to Nelson until 3! But whenever we could, Cash and I got out and stretched, walked around, or had a picnic in a park! On the Wednesday, him and I explored Nelson while Garrick was out working. All in all, there were no major freak outs in the car, and it was a rather pleasurable experience.

Cash really wants to play with the cats. He tried to dangle their toys in front of them. So cute!

Very attracted to the colour red. And anything floating.

Osoyoos

Osoyoos Mini Vaction

Last weekend, after we found out Garrick's brother wasn't going to make it down for a visit, we decided to take a last- minute trip to Osoyoos! Thursday night we booked a hotel for the Friday and Saturday nights. We are done with camping for the year, and Garrick thought it would feel like more of a getaway if we stayed in a hotel.

I vowed to take my SLR camera and take some "real" photos... But in the hustle and bustle of packing for three in such a short period of time, I forgot it at home. Go figure. So, you will have to settle for iPhone photos! Better than nothing, right?

We stayed at a Super 8 that had really decently sized rooms! Cash slept in his play pen, and slept even better than he does at home! The first night he slept from 8:30 pm - 3:30 am, then until 6:15 am. The second night, he woke up twice! Maybe the secret is a later bed time... or the play pen... Anyway, the rooms all opened onto the pool courtyard, so Garrick and I were able to sit out on the deck with the baby monitor, while Cash slept! Much better than sitting in the room, in the dark, trying to be as quiet as possible.

The boys spent a LOT of time in the pool together, so I got to relax! It was very nice. And Cash made lots of friends at the pool. If anyone showed him attention, he wouldn't leave them alone! He'd walk around, then stop and look at them every few steps to make sure they were still watching.

10 Months - July 15th

How is it possible that Cash is going to be ONE YEAR OLD in only two months?! I can't believe it.

couch cash 10 months

Sleep
Not much is new in this category. He was doing really good at falling asleep happily on his own, in the crib, at the beginning of the night, and even for some naps! But still waking frequently during the night, and insisting on nursing.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned before, but he's quite the active sleeper. Sometimes he rolls around so much, I'm sure that he's waking up and going to cry any minute.. but usually he doesn't.

Physical Development
Cash learned to get from a sitting position to an (army) crawling position, without doing a nose dive every time. He's quite graceful now! He also started to walk along furniture, which is nice because then it gives me a break. Although he gets annoyed when he realizes he can't always get to where he wants, because his "walking path" runs out.

Does his hair curling count as a physical development? haha. Sometimes it's quite the mess after nap time.

Random Events
We've spent quite a bit of time outside and at the beach and whatnot. Sometimes the beach isn't so much fun, because he either wants to nurse the whole time, or wants to be walked around (not that this is unusual in general). We let him go into the water on his own terms, and usually after dipping his feet in a couple times, he beelines into it until he's armpit deep. I bought a floaty for him, but I think he's still a little too nervous to not be holding my hands. Oh well, he can use it next year too!

While Garrick was in the Kootenays, Cash and I took a very last minute flight to Edmonton to visit my mom and dad. Sorry, everyone else, for not letting you know!!! I feel bad.. but it was really a last minute decision, and we weren't in town very long. BUT Gar's mom will be visiting at the end of August, and his dad will be here for Cash's birthday... whereas my parents won't see him again until Christmas. Anyway, he slept great at their place! Even though he was in an unfamiliar environment, and in a play pen. That was probably his best sleep out of the whole month haha. Cash spent a lot of the time trying to feed Scootch his treats.. which then got Scootch in trouble. Sorry, buddy.

Oh Cash, you have noooo idea how much we love you!! You fill our lives with so much joy and entertainment every day. And even though night times can be frustrating for all of us, we're learning to get through it together. I like to think that our gentle night time parenting techniques are setting you up for a future of peaceful, pleasant sleeping. I know you've got a lot going on in that little mind of yours right now; who has time for sleep?!

It's so fun introducing you to new things, even if they seem so mundane. When we're camping, I like to walk around with you in my arms, and show you aspects of nature around us. We stroke and scratch the bark on treees, touch leaves and pine needles, and shake tree branches. I love seeing your face when you discover all these different textures.

Your personality is definitely shining through. I notice many differences in you and your little friends! You are more reserved and inquisitive about the people and things around you. You prefer other calm babies, and tend to avoid the more rambunctious ones. When we're out and about, you tend to be a little more quiet as you study your surroundings. At home, you're quite vocal! You've been doing a lot of babbling, and I'm trying to pay attention to see if your different sounds have any meaning yet.

Your dad loves taking you for early morning walks on the weekend. You walk all around our complex, and always return with a slug-count for me. Just wait until you're older when you'll be picking these slimey things up! During the week, dad is usually the one to get you when you wake up - you almost always wake up within minutes of him getting out of bed. He cheerfully greets you, then the two of you head downstairs to turn on the coffee machine and feed the cats. Then dad brings you into our room. Once you see me, you get super excited, knowing that we'll cuddly together for our first nursing session of the day. When you're done, I set you on the floor and you army crawl into the bathroom where dad is showering. You and I brush our teeth while he finishes getting ready, then we all head downstairs. You and dad share yogurt, which you LOVE. As soon as you see that container, you're all wiggly and talkative and demanding spoonfuls. We can't shovel it into your mouth quick enough!

We look forward to more summery days with you, little dude. Keep on being fun!

Love,
Mama

p.s. I look forward to camping again next year, when you won't be putting EVERY rock in your mouth!

This picture is purposefully late.. it was during this week that Cash and I had a little photo shoot done with Carla-Jean Stokes Photography, so I wanted to use one of her images for that week's photo! Which meant that the week after got delayed as well...

9 Months - June 15

couch cash 9 months

Here you are, three quarters of an entire year old! Your dad and I can't believe it. You are changing right before our eyes, learning something new every day. Currently, your favourite thing to do is walk. And walk, and walk, and walk. When you get in this mind set and we try to sit you down or put you on your tummy so you can army crawl, you get very upset.

Sleep
I swear, Cash is the most inconsistent baby ever, when it comes to sleep. We are so up and down with it!!! Right now, on a good day he'll only wake up two to three times during the night. On a bad day, it's anywhere from every 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. I'm not a fan of those nights. We went through an entire week where he was waking up at 5 am for the morning, wouldn't fall back to sleep, and would just cry and cry and cry if we left him alone in the crib. That was rough.

I feel like I shouldn't even mention this, in fear of jinxing it, but..
Napping has been going really well. 95% of the time he'll nap a solid 1.5-2 hours in the morning. And if we're home, he'll usually have a 1 hour nap in the afternoon.

Physical Development
We have teeth! His first tooth - bottom left-central - cut through on May 17, with the right-central following just a couple days later. A couple weeks ago, he began to nip once he got bored breastfeeding. A friend, who received advice from a lactation consultant, said that when he does that, tug on his ear lobe and end the nursing session immediately.. don't make a loud noise or say anything else to them. A lot of babies associate their ears with their mouths/teeth... many tug on their ears while teething. So by tugging on their ear, you're letting them know that biting while nursing is not okay. He got the hint so far.

As mentioned, all he wants to do is walk around.

Eating
Still loves meat! And a lot of red foods... red peppers, strawberries, watermelon. Really likes avocado. Oh, and zucchini.
There's nothing that he actually doesn't like!
